To mark the opening of the 800th natural gas filling station in Germany in January 2009 and the launch of the new Passat TSI EcoFuel, Rainer Zietlow and Franz Janusiewicz decided to visit all CNG filling stations in Germany in less than 80 days. They were supported by the German CNG agency „Gibgas.de“. Between January 7 and March 27, 2009, 810 CNG filling stations were visited and covered 23,731 kilometers. Compared to a conventional fuel-operated vehicle, more than 1,000 kg of CO2 were saved. The CNG Germany Tour started at a CNG filling station in Irschenberg in southern Bavaria, and ended at a CNG filling station in Westerland on the island of Sylt. The route was planned at TU Dortmund University, where a team spent several weeks calculating to find the ideal route on the German road network. Zietlow and Januczewicz also used their CNG tour to survey gas station operators and CNG drivers for their opinion on CNG and to create a new CNG map of Germany.
After completing the project, Rainer Zietlow donated 20 euro cents for every kilometer driven to the SOS Children´s Village in Dießen am Ammersee, which he also visited in person.
